TYPE OF MUSIC: My first love is Soca and Reggae, but I also love whatever is pleasing to my ears or what I could relate to. It doesn’t really matter what type of music it is, for instance, I listen to Zouk and African styles. I don’t understand what they are saying but I get a feeling from it.
Roots, otherwise known as Shawn Mitchell, has been the bassist of Xtatik for the past year.
Shawn comes from a musically inclined family having been trained from a tender age by his uncle before moving on towards Erasmus Academy of Arts to further his studies in music. By age 10, Roots was already a performer. When he enrolled in Erasmus at age 13, he started playing the saxophone doing concert music then moved on to jazz. In his last year of school, he transferred to the bass. He taught himself by listening to lots of reggae, calypso, and funk and rock music.
After playing the bass for three years and working on a cruise ship for two years after that, he decided to formulate his own band based in New York called ReQuest. Three years later he received an invitation to become a part of Xtatik.
Roots, mostly known for his rock hard stomach, long locks and smooth moves with the ladies, meet our bassist whose main squeeze are his daughters and a good plate of Sunday lunch.
